TYPICAL SINGLE STAGE CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

 TYPICAL SINGLE STAGE CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

1. PARTS & FUNCTIONS

The important parts of a single stage centrifugal pump are the following: -

1. Rotary elements.

centrifugal pump

1. Shaft.

2. Impeller

3. Coupling

4. Oil rings.

2. Stationary elements.

1. Casing.

2. Stuffing box.

 3. Bearings.

 4. Driver.

 5. Auxiliary parts.

 1. Foundation.

 2. Bed plates etc.

2. ROTARY ELEMENTS

 1. SHAFT

shaft holds the impeller at one end and a half coupling at the other.  When coupled to a driver, the shaft rotates the impeller. A shaft sleeve protects a shaft from corrosion, erosion and wear.

 2. IMPELLER

Impeller is the element that pumps the liquid. It consists of 3 main parts.

 1. Hub.

 2. Vanes.

3. Shroud.

The liquid inlet opening just before the vanes start is called the suction eye. Impellers are manufactured in many designs.

 a. Open type impeller

Open type impeller has vanes only to a central hub without any form of sidewall or shroud.  Such impellers are used in small inexpensive pumps or for abrasive liquids.

b. Semi-open impeller

A semi-open impeller is one, which has a shroud or wall on one side only.  These are suitable for heavy and viscous liquids as well as for liquids containing solids, which can clog the spaces between vanes.
